Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is an integrating and inseparable part of the Brazilian public education system. UFMG was established in 1927 and since then its history has been characterized by a relentless quest for increasing standards of excellence and relevancy in relation to teaching, research and outreach activities. UFMG has been ranked among the best universities in the country as a result of evaluation procedures conducted among institutions of higher education in Brazil. It is part of the international university milieu and boasts impressive academic indicators. Currently, UFMG has approximately 2500 faculty members who teach for 80 undergraduate courses and 66 graduate courses in all areas of knowledge, in a total of 37000 students. Its main campus occupies an area of 8.8 km2.

The Department of Computer Science was established in 1972 and is responsible for the undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Information Systems and the graduate program in Computer Science. Currently, there are 31 faculty members involved in research activities in the graduate program. Most of them obtained their PhD degrees abroad from institutions in the USA (e.g., Stanford, CMU, University of California, Princeton, UPenn, Wisconsin, Maryland, Rochester, etc), Canada (UBC, Waterloo), England (e.g., Oxford, Southampton, etc), and France. Currently, the department has 715 undergraduate and 250 graduate students. According to an annual evaluation performed by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, our undergraduate Computer Science program received the highest score in Brazil, and our graduate program in Computer Science is among the top three in the country.
